A Brief Guide To Agile Project Management

by Clare Westwood on May 3, 2010

Agile project management systems refer to a group of software development methodologies l based on iterative development as requirements and solutions move through self organizing multi functional teams. The term Agile Project Management was used in 2001 when the Agile Manifesto was created, the manifesto has a list of principles behind agile.

Agile project management usually aims to promote constant change and experiment. It is based around team work and leadership as well as individual work that develops customer needs as well as company goals.

Generally speaking the concepts behind Agile project management can be seen in modern approaches to analysis and management such as soft system methodology, Six Sigma, and speech act theory.

Agile project management methods are sometimes discussed as being the other end of the spectrum from so called ‘disciplined’ or ‘plan driven’ methods of working. This opinion is not strictly correct as it suggests that agile methods are not disciplined or planned. In reality agile methods work on a continuing improvement level with constant adaption in order to keep up to date.

Agile systems are constantly being compared to adaptive systems which change in order to solve problems when the needs of a particular project begin to change direction. The main downside to adaptive systems is that they have great difficulty with predicting what will happen in the future and therefore are only successful when a change actually occurs.

On the other hand predictive methods tend to focus on planning the future in great detail. A predictive team can report exactly what features and tasks are planned for the entire length of the development process yet predictive teams have difficulty changing direction.

The main principles behind agile management systems are; encouraging customer collaborations over contract detail, the ability to respond to a challenge in a positive and successful way, prioritizing an individual’s actions over the use of tools and processes.

Using an agile project management system can be a huge benefit. Using an issue tracker will help a business run smoothly.
