Connections On Your Network

by Roger Bailey on August 29, 2010

A network router is capable of handling large amounts of traffic. Because of this, it′s seen as one of the best devices for creating a network. However, even though it′s the best out there, routers have a connection limit that can′t be exceeded.

The amount of connections your network can handle will depend on the type of router you have. The most capable ones can handle up to 253 connections. However, as the number increases the speed of your internet will decrease.

A connection is a pretty easy concept for those who don′t know what one is. Anything that needs to load on a page or browser is a single connection. Pictures, videos, instant messages are all examples of single connections.

It′s important to understand that a single webpage may count as multiple connections. It will obviously have its dot com to load, but it may also have a video or image on the page that requires loading as well. Sometimes the majority of the connections come from internet ads. Each ad can count as a single connection.

Of course routers are created to withstand multiple computers, but there is always a limit. If you don′t have that many computers, you probably won′t ever run into problems. The problem with connection overloads or “bottlenecking” usually comes when there are too many computers doing way to many things at once.

Having a bottleneck in your network can be frustrating, but there are easy ways to prevent and fix it. If you want to solve the problem for good you will need either a better router or an additional one. Sometimes, you simply need to create another network in order to handle all the connections that are being made.

If you don′t want to take these steps, then you will have to focus on limiting the connections that go through your network. Do this by closing out of browses and windows that aren′t needed. Turn off computers that are running idly and just be aware of how much loading really is going on.

Networks can handle quite a bit of traffic and it takes a lot to really jam them up. You′ll probably never have to deal with a bottlenecked system, but if you do these easy steps will easily solve your problems. Just a little bit of organization in your network can really cut down on your connections.
