Most of the very best family films have been adapted from wonderful children′s literature. Much loved children′s books that have stood the test of time often make wonderful family films. Most of these movies are great by themselves but a question is how closely do the movies stick to the storyline of the book?

In 2008, “The Spiderwick Chronicles″ by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi was converted into a movie. There are five books in the series but only one movie has been made to date. It follows the adventure of a family of children that find a strange book in their brand new home that leads them into a entire world filled with trolls and goblins, elves, dwarves as well as other creatures.

The much loved children′s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl was originally published in 1964. On the other hand, the big budget film of “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas″ from 2000 added several new scenes and events. The movie “The Cat In The Hat” which came out in 2003 also made many changes from the book.

One of the highest grossing film series in history is from the children′s books about Harry Potter written by J.K. Rowling.
