Internet Connections

by Roger Bailey on August 28, 2010

Connecting to the Internet is pretty simple especially with all the technology we have today. There are a lot of different ways to connect and each way has its benefits and downsides. Make sure you know what you want to get out of your Internet connection before you choose a type of connection.

The first mainstream Internet connection was dial-up or Analog. Dial-up is where the Internet is accessed through your phone lines. The downside is that it takes up your phone line and is pretty slow. On the other hand, it is one of the cheapest Internet connections if that′s something you’re looking for.

DSL is similar to dial-up because it too uses the phone lines. However, it does not tie up your phone line and you don’t have to dial into it. It is always connected and is a great choice for basic Internet.

Another popular connection many people use is Cable Internet. This connects you to the Internet through your cable modem. The great thing about this type of connection is that you have much greater bandwidth, consequently making your Internet run much quicker.

Of course, we can’t forget to mention wireless Internet. This type of Internet has skyrocketed in popularity in the past few years. Most populated areas now offer wireless and many bookstores, libraries, and schools have it as well.

Using a wireless router, you can have multiple computers and laptops connected through to form a network. You may have your network connected with a hub or a switch, but a router can do the same thing a hub does. Wireless routers will take the place of a hub or switch but can also be a little pricey.

Most basic forms of Internet are available in almost any populated area. Make sure you check into what′s available where you live as your options may become limited. Once you know what′s out there, you can then decide what best fits your needs.

Understanding Internet connections and what they do is important when deciding on a certain connection. It may be confusing at first, but with a little knowledge almost anyone can understand. Because of the variety of connection types, you are sure to find the right one for you.
