From the time it was built in 1931, New York City′s Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world, a record it held for 40 years, this was until 1972 when the North Tower of the World Trade Center was built.
How things change! The Empire State Building has become the tallest building in New York City for a second time, but this is only due to the sad destruction of the World Trade Center.
Located quite a distance away from any public transportation unfortunately led to the Empire State Building becoming an undesirable prospect for New Yorkers to live in, this was compounded with the fact that as it was built during the Great depression, money was in short demand so it was rather difficult to rent out its space.
The sad fact is that it took about 20 years before the Empire State Building started to actually become profitable.
Back in 1945 there was a strange occurrence at the Empire State Building when a B-25 Bomber crashed into floors 79 and 80 of the building, one of the engines was found down one of the elevator shafts whilst the other was found almost a block away on a roof.
The elevator operator that was on duty at the time and who fell 75 storeys in the accident actually lived to tell the story. Fog on the day had caused the pilot to make an error which unfortunately claimed 14 lives.
The Empire State Building actually houses two observation decks, one on the 86thfloor and one on the 102nd floor; needless to say they have become one of the world’s most popular tourist attractions.
For an uninterrupted view of New York City you just have to check out the 360 degree view from the deck of the 86th floor.
