Work From Home – Preparing For An Ugly Day

by Brian Lett on August 30, 2010

If you plan to work from home and make a consistent living, you must be keenly aware of the fact that things can go badly, very quickly. Unless you are able to predict the future, you do not know what the future holds. Thus, it is important that you take steps to protect your home business from what could be a potentially devastating situation. How will you react if something which you rely on heavily for your home business were no longer available? You need to develop of plan of action to keep your business up and running should this occur. Doing so will enable you to act expeditiously, and minimize stress, should the worst case scenario play out.

Below, you will find four things that you can do to prepare yourself should tragedy strike.

1. Work as best you can through these occurrences. Customers feel your pain. Just make sure that you thoroughly communicate with your customers regarding the situation, and set expectations. Make sure that you provide steady updates with your customers, as information and communication are important. Nearly all of your customers will be accepting of a delay provided that they are aware of the circumstances. If it becomes apparent to you that you simply will be unable to provide your customers which what they were purchasing from you, make sure that you inform them of this fact immediately. Never wait for the last possible moment to apprise your customers of a possible difficulty.

Further, if your work from home business is at risk of being neglected due to a sick child, make every effort to work when your child is asleep. Minimize your stress by focusing on your child first, and making a list of all of the things which must be completed for work. This list will put your mind at ease, and enable you to get as much done as possible while your child is asleep.

2. Never hesitate to ask someone for their help. Much of the time, we entrepreneurs feel that we have to do everything on our own. Unfortunately, we are not superhuman. Therefore, there will come a time where it is impossible to complete everything, and we will get behind. This is the time that you need to ask for a helping hand. However, before you get to this point, you need to speak to someone and ask for their help in the event that things become too hectic for you alone. What you ask this person to do need not be too significant. However, it can help you out immensely.

Moreover, you can really allow someone to feel good about themselves simply knowing that they were the person that you turned to for help. This shows the individual that you trust them, and lets them know that you view them as being responsible.

3. Of course, we always want to be optimistic. Nonetheless, we have to prepare as though we are the most pessimistic set of individuals on the planet. I would rather be safe than sorry, and I hope that you feel the same way. Therefore, if you live in a flood region, such as the Fargo, North Dakota Red River Valley, make sure that you have a plan of action in place in the event of a flood. Likewise, if you live in an area which is susceptible to hurricanes, such as New Orleans, LA, or Daytona Beach, FL, make sure that you have a mechanism in place which will protect your business from becoming bankrupt should your area get hit by a hurricane. For example, do you have a place to go which is not threatened?

4. Make Your Plan. There are times when life becomes overwhelming, and you simply are not able to accomplish everything on your own. These are the times at which you need to have some type of system in place of what you do, and what needs to be done. Keep a ledger of tasks which need to be completed, how often they are completed, and check them off as completed as you are able to complete them. Keep a list of all of your passwords in a secure place. Make sure that your family (or whoever may be helping you during this time) is able to carry on even in the event that you are away from home.

Ideally, you will want to walk someone through the steps of what you do on a day to day basis. Thus, if something should come up, you will be prepared.

We should all know by now that affliction can appear without any warning. The good news is that if you are prepared for the worst, you can handle such situations, as far as your business is concerned. Those of you who work from home must protect your home business from unanticipated events which can put it in peril. Such preparation will lessen the stress which you experience should a negative situation arise.

To the people who Work From Home, you must be ready in case things go badly quickly. Your Home Business has a way better chance of survival if you know how to react to challenges. Check us out at SOSComplete.com
